Sisters of the Road

BIPOC-Led Organization

Mission

We build authentic relationships and alleviate the hunger of isolation in an atmosphere of nonviolence and gentle personalism that nurtures the whole individual, while seeking systemic solutions that reach the roots of homelessness and poverty in order to end them forever.

Bottom Line for Portland

In the face of Portland's affordability crisis, we strive to mobilize a grassroots community around violent policies impacting our unsheltered neighbors. We've successfully influenced Portland City Council to reduce mass encampment size limits and change its plans regarding ShotSpotter. Additionally, our joint campaign, "Save Portland Street Response," in coalition with numerous local organizations, has garnered over 10,000 signatures.

Quote

““We cannot afford to let people who are afraid of the homeless be the ones exclusively responsible for making policy about their lives. “

– Genny Nelson, co-founder (1951-2020)

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity and inclusion is fundamental to our entire organization. Being houseless is a direct result of systemic oppression that marginalizes groups of people. Every time we are in a position to advocate, we are doing so for the equity of those experiencing the violence of poverty.
