Mission

Outside the Frame trains homeless and marginalized youth to be the directors of their own films and lives. Our film workshops provides job training, a creative outlet, an audience, and a sense of dignity and possibility.

Bottom Line for Portland

Each year, we work with over 100 youth to make films that heal trauma and support the transition out of homelessness. Movie-making is a great field for people who are creative, who work well with others, who see possibility and create something from nothing. Being on a film set is not easy, but it fits well with the kind of people who are brave enough to leave traumatic situations like abuse and instability and find their own way.

Quote

“When I came to OTF as a houseless addict, I was one of the unheard voices that I now amplify. All of my trauma, grief and pain had made me feel that I had no worth, no place in the world, and nothing of value to say. Outside the Frame helped me change my perspective.” Joey Wander, former OTF participant, current staff member.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Trained to work in an industry notorious for its lack of diversity, youth who are or have been homeless secure well-paid jobs while breaking class barriers to housing, education, health, and well-being. Program participants lead screenings and public forums to help overcome social stigma and put a human face on homelessness and survival. Their films promote pride, empowerment, and community responsibility while stirring support to improve public policy.
