Outside In

Mission

We help homeless youth and other marginalized people move towards improved health and self-sufficiency.

Bottom Line for Portland

We provide safe, affirming spaces for our community to receive judgment-free care and support. Our outstanding team delivers integrated medical and behavioral health care—including an on-site pharmacy, substance use and medication-assisted treatment—as well as safety, nutrition, and education and job training for young adults experiencing homelessness, and additional social services at seven locations in the Portland metro area. More than 11,000 people access care and services each year at Outside In.

Quote

“Here at Outside In, I’ve had the right resources. And now life is flowing. It feels like I have a spark, something to look forward to that’s new to me.”

–Charlize, former program participant

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Outside In recognizes our participants and employees have unique experiences rooted in and affected by race, culture, gender and gender identity, age, belief systems, social class and income, sexual orientation, physical ability, and other aspects of individual identity. The pandemic has exacerbated health care access challenges for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ populations, but Outside In continues to provide essential, low-barrier, and trauma-informed care to these communities. Much of our leadership team and our board as well as more than 30 percent of our staff identify as people of color, while throughout our agency our staff receives training in anti-racism, motivational interviewing, assertive engagement, gender-affirming care, the systemic causes of homelessness and poverty, and the social determinants of health.

Partner(s)

Our thoughtful friends at The Benito and Frances C. Gaguine Foundation invite donors to double their impact through Give!Guide by matching gifts to Outside In, having doubled their own gift this year because they have seen how our programs and services transform lives and build futures.

Our nonprofit partners include New Avenues for Youth and Janus Youth Progams, who have joined Outside In for years as part of the Multnomah County Homeless Youth Continuum to help ensure services reach those who need them most.
