Mission

MCEC creates strong connections in underserved communities by providing a judgment-free space for parents to access no-cost support, education, & resources focused on the health and welfare of children 0-5. We help families thrive, not just survive.

MCEC supports families through direct, no-cost services; and advocates for the population it serves, regardless of racial, ethnic, cultural, or gender differences. More than 41 languages were spoken by clients last year. Our clients are primarily low-income families, including anyone in care of a child, and often face challenges, such as lack of housing, poverty, domestic violence, substance abuse, or other trauma. We empower our clients to set healthy parenting goals; understand safe sleeping habits for infants; and achieve personal goals, such as self-sufficiency and self-advocacy. MCEC provides its clients with prenatal and parenting classes; needed supplies, such as food, clothing, hygiene products, diapers, blankets, formula, and safety equipment (car seats, cribs, and strollers); and access to additional resources through our partners. Our non-profit is very connected to community partners, clients and to the volunteers and college interns who help us achieve our goals.

Bottom Line for Portland

MCEC helps people who have barriers to accessing services not only get immediate support but learn how to access systems (like WIC and the Oregon Health Plan). This helps reduce health gaps caused by differences in race and ethnicity, location, social status, income, and other factors that can affect health. Finally, MCEC provides crucial supplies like formula, diapers and strollers that are hard for low-income families to find in the Portland community.

Quote

Suffering from domestic violence, I didn't know where to turn to and a friend told me about Mother & Child. I instantly felt at home. They clothed by baby, gave me diapers and maybe the best thing is they hugged me and said everything is going to be okay. And I believe them.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At both the Board and Staff level, we believe that embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion is a way to intentionally make space for positive outcomes to flourish. This begins with the intentional recruitment of diverse board members, staff, interns, volunteers, and community partners who share our core values. It also means we expect clients to be treated equitably, fairly, and with respect in a judgement-free zone. .We respect and value diverse life experiences and heritages and ensure that all voices are valued and heard.
