HomeShare Oregon
Mission
HomeShare Oregon expands access to affordable housing through homesharing. We believe this is a direct way to prevent housing instability, foreclosure, and homelessness.
We see homesharing as an immediate solution to our affordable housing crisis. Connecting homeowners who have space to share with renters seeking affordable housing is a common sense, immediately available response to prevent housing instability.
Bottom Line for Portland
Portland metro's housing crisis has become a humanitarian crisis. Currently, we are severely behind in housing production at all income levels and we have seen a steady increase in homelessness. Senior women are now the fastest growing population of the unhoused. The average one bedroom, one bath apartment is between $1,500 - $1,700.00 monthly and experts predict by the end of 2023, this number will exceed $2,000. The average home sharing agreement is on average $800-$900 a month—almost $1,000 less than the current market rate. To date, over 484 homeowners in the Portland metro area signed-up with Home Share Oregon to rent a spare bedroom which reduced the need for 484 low-income apartments. We work in partnership with organizations to increase access to affordable housing by engaging the community and putting to work the underutilized housing inventory which already exists, and with counties and cities to incentivize and encourage homeowners to participate.
