Mission

Forest Park Conservancy is a community-supported organization whose mission is to protect and restore the ecological health of Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park, maintain and enhance these extensive trails networks, promote equitable access, and inspire diverse community appreciation and stewardship of these iconic urban forests for generations to come.

Bottom Line for Portland

At 5,200 acres, Forest Park accounts for more than half of the natural space in Portland and plays a significant role in helping local communities withstand, adapt to, and recover from the increasing effects of climate change. Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park both provide recreational opportunities to nearly a million visitors per year and ecosystem services that are critical to increasing the resiliency of local communities, including, clean air and water, carbon sequestration, and lower summer temperatures. By stewarding Forest and Marquam Nature Park alongside people from local communities, FPC helps ensure that people have access to safe and expansive green spaces within the city of Portland and that critical ecosystem services that support their communities are protected.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

FPC actively works towards building a culture in Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park where individuals feel safe and welcome in their interactions and experiences with nature, to ultimately strengthen and diversify the community of stewards dedicated to caring for and protecting Forest Park, Marquam Nature Park, and our public lands. 

To achieve this goal, FPC is dedicated to connecting underserved groups, such as local BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ communities, to natural spaces like Forest Park and Marquam Nature Park, as well as connecting people to opportunities in the green jobs field. FPC leads a Green Jobs Workforce Development Program for BIPOC youth and young adults in partnership with The Blueprint Foundation, Wisdom of the Elders, Ecotrust, Columbia Land Trust, and West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District.

We’re partnering with Northwest Trail Alliance as our non-profit partner. FPC partners with NWTA and PP&R on trail maintenance projects for Firelane 5 in Forest Park. Firelane 5 is one of the most popular multi-use trails in Forest Park, and our ongoing work to improve drainage and erosion has had a tremendous positive impact on long-term environmental sustainability in Forest Park. We could not do this work alone; we are so grateful for partnerships like this to take care of Forest Park together. Thank you NWTA!
