Blosser Center for Dyslexia Resources
Mission
The Blosser Center’s mission is to help students with dyslexia reach their potential through the power of literacy. Blosser uses the Orton-Gillingham approach - the gold standard in literacy instruction- to teach students and train teachers.
Bottom Line for Portland
Dyslexia affects 15-20% of the population. That is almost 5 kids per classroom. There is an urgent need to help these students learn how to read, write, and spell. The Blosser Center fills that gap.
This year, Blosser Dyslexia Specialists will provide over 4,000 hours of tutoring for students with dyslexia, with 98% of our students seeing improvement in their literacy skills. Blosser is also committed to educating teachers in the science of reading. Our services include:
- * Free Orton-Gillingham reading support to several PPS Title I schools
- * 1:1 Orton-Gillingham tutoring services for students with dyslexia
- * 4-week Rev Up Your Reading summer reading program for all struggling readers in the community
- * 2,000 hours annually of teacher training. Blosser is included on the Oregon Department of Education’s list of approved dyslexia training for classroom educators.
Quote
"My child’s Special Ed teacher told me there was no such thing as dyslexia and that I was an over-involved parent! After three years in Special Education, with my child’s self-esteem deteriorating rapidly, I found an Orton-Gillingham tutor who saved his life! Within six months of tutoring, my son was reading!"
